Fairytale Destination: Wheatleigh Hotel

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (unless you live on the East Coast and it’s simply known as The Berkshires) a girl accepted the proposal of a dashing Spanish Count. Her father, overjoyed for his daughter and her betrothed, gave them the perfect wedding gift: a humble little place to spend their summers. And thus (great word, “thus”) Wheatleigh was commissioned.

Completed in 1893 and inspired by a 16th century Florentine palazzo, the “summer cottage” was constructed by materials imported from Italy and employed over 150 artisans to oversee every intricate detail. Such details still remain, as does the grandeur of the palazzo, over 100 years later. Lucky for us, it’s also accepting reservations year-round. I think I could while away the summer here. Um….dad?

The grounds surrounding the estate was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who designed New York’s famous Central Park.

The Great Room is elegant yet restrained, never becoming ostentatious or overdone.

One of the famous dining rooms – sip your coffee and take in the amazing views.
