Itsy Bitsy, Teeny Weeny
Mayor Bloomberg made waves in New York City this week when he announced a competition challenging real estate developers to create an entire building of itty-bitty apartments. These petite places are going by the terribly unsexy name of “micro-units” and will measure no more than 300 sq. ft. Now, while I appreciate Mr. Bloomberg’s efforts (he even admitted that a younger – read “poorer” – version of himself would consider living there!) I have to say, teensy apartments are nothing new in this great city. And my designer brain adores tackling the challenge of tight spaces! My own measures 375 sq ft!!
Here are a few of my all-time favorite mini-bites.
Loft beds are a lifesaver in tiny spaces, although climbing a ladder to get there might take some getting used to. Bonus: I love how this couple managed to fit a dining table!
This apartment, owned and designed by stylist Jane Fife, was featured back in 2009 when the apartment went up for sale. I wonder what the new owners did with it.
Nicholas Moriarty Interiors designed this cozy bachelor pad, using carefully placed details to keep the apartment feeling rich and layered.
A little gem with a lot of gorgeous-ness! The bay windows, amazing fireplace and high ceilings infuse the space with ultra-luxury.
Featured in Apartment Therapy’s wildly popular “Small But Cool” contest, this 397 sq ft Manhattan apartment became an instant star. It seems huge! Here is another view:
The owner, Michael, divided this space brilliantly, creating a space for everything, including a queen bed! Check out the entire apartment here.
I love living in a small space, but it’s not for everyone. Would you, could you, in a micro-mini?
